Sounding Out New Words

Sounding out words isn't just an exercise for young children. As your child gets older, he'll encounter more challenging vocabulary in the books and educational materials he's reading. Teach him how to use the phonetic skills he's already mastered to sound out words. Particularly when you're reading together or he's doing homework, resist the urge to pronounce a difficult word for him. Instead, give him a chance to sound it out and applaud his efforts.
