Sound and Movement Are as Important as Words

It’s not just what you say to your baby that registers meaning – it’s also how you say it, and how you look, act, and move when you’re saying it. If your baby hears a loud, stern, “Stop!” as he’s crawling toward the fireplace, he may not just halt, but cry, because he’s reacting to the sharpness and volume of your command. In the same way, a soft, loving "good night" when you are tucking him into bed will comfort your child because of the soothing tone.
