Semicolons Separate Complete Sentences
Semicolons are awesome; they add interest to writing and join two clauses of equal weight. Kids, however, get really confused about them, so teach your middle schoolers this semicolon rule: use a semicolon if what appears in front of it can be a sentence by itself, and if what appears behind it can be a sentence by itself.
