Jump-Start New Year's Reading Goals With a Book Sweep

This New Year's Day, begin setting reading goals for 2018 with your child, starting with a bookshelf sweep. As your young reader transitions from picture books reading to more independent reads, it's a great time to clear off his bookshelf. Include your child in the task, and take a look at every book on the shelf. Have your child consider sorting books into piles such as "too easy in 2017," "too hard in 2017," and "to be read." Then, set goals based on the books that might've been difficult in 2017. Ask your child, "How about we try this book again this year?" Keep your language positive to encourage giving the challenging books another try.
