Help Your Child Identify Spelling Patterns

Choose one particular spelling pattern to work on – such as the letter combination ea. Then, read a familiar poem or bedtime story and ask your child to point out all of the ea words. This exercise will help your child recognize the sound, as well as the spelling combination. As an extension activity, list various spelling patterns on a piece of poster board, and include examples from this exercise in the ea column.
