Follow Your Child's Eyes and Interest

There are opportunities everywhere for your child to learn new words--but be careful you’re mostly following her lead. Say you’re at the park and you see a big, white dog. At that moment, your child seems more interested in the leaf she found or the stick she’s digging with. Instead of distracting her with the “more interesting” dog, express interest in what she’s into: “Wow, look at that cool leaf! It’s half yellow and half green!”
