Carrots and Beets

Show your child how the roots of a plant work. Take a raw carrot or beet, and cut about two inches off its top. Set the cut side down in a dish with about a half-inch of water.  Every one or two days, change the water. Your child will notice when the roots appear. At that point, plant it, roots facing down, in a roomy pot with moist soil.
