Area in the Real World

Most children describe the area of a shape by its inside. However, since area describes two-dimensional shapes, a better definition for it is “the amount of space that covers a flat surface,” rather than an actual “inside.” Encourage your child to see area in the real world. Count the number of tiles in the kitchen, figure out the space of your garden by counting footsteps, or calculate the area your rug covers by measuring its length and width.
