Why You Gotta Go: Mystical and enchanting, Wales stirs the blood of castle fanatics worldwide. There are 641 here to be exact — more than any other country in Europe. Our favorite: Carreg Cennen, built in the 13th century. Beneath its ruins lies a mysterious cave that young lords and ladies can explore by flashlight. Trek one hour west to the Merlin’s Hill Centre, on a family-owned dairy farm, to learn about the myth of Merlin the wizard. (He’s from Wales, you know.) Nearby, hike the family-friendly trails at Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.
Know who else is from Wales? Thomas the Tank Engine! The historic railway in Tywyn inspired the original book series. Ramble through the museum and then climb aboard for an unforgettable ride through the awesome countryside.
Chow Down: Spend an afternoon at Rhug Organic Farm in Denbighshire. They serve simple, delicious, fresh grub, like jacket potatoes (baked potatoes) and sausage rolls, indoors and out.
Lay Your Heads: If you’re up for the offbeat, check out Fforest Farm in Cardigan, an outdoor-oriented venue where you can rent everything from a luxury cabin to a family-size tent. They also host wood burning–oven pizza dinners in the garden throughout the summer.
