Lowji Discovers America

Lowji Discovers America

by Candace Fleming

Lowji's parents promise him a dog when his mother gets a job in America. But when they arrive at their home, it turns out their new landlady has the same policy as their apartment building in India: no pets allowed. Not willing to take no for an answer, Lowji occupies his long summer days looking for an opportunity to convince cranky Mrs. Crisp that animals won't make more work for her. First, Lowji convinces her to get a cat to chase the mice, then a dog to protect the building, and finally, goats to keep the grass trim.

As Lowji helps Mrs. Crisp with the animals, he slowly begins to make friends in his community — including a bodybuilder with a pet pig. Maybe America isn't so bad after all. Now if only Lowji could make a human friend his own age…

Lowji's lively experiments with American slang, his affable explorations of his new world, and his willingness to share his own culture with his new friends make for an inspiring and heartwarming story.
