Girls Speak Out: Finding Your True Self

Girls Speak Out: Finding Your True Self

by Andrea Johnston
This affirmative collection of women's writing and women's history encourages young girls to develop positive self-esteem to survive the complexities of adolescence.

Most of the literary material presented here is derived from Girls Speak Out, a national educational and empowerment program for girls, ages 9 to 15. Girls who have participated in the program's two-day workshops use poetry, storytelling, journal writing, and other creative outlets to express their thoughts and feelings about becoming women. Profiles of prominent women and selections from noted women writers are also included: renowned women's activist Gloria Steinem wrote the book's introduction.

This is a helpful resource to help boost the self-confidence of adolescent girls, minimize their feelings of insecurity, and offset the influence of negative peer pressure.
