Read and Learn About Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (for Older Kids)

Here are our top five books about two important Jewish holidays.
on September 14, 2015

For many who practice Judaism, fall is a time of holidays and family time, celebration, and reflection.

Although the dates vary from year to year, fall is when the High Holidays, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, take place. Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year, and it's a day of celebration. Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement, is a solemn day, when many observant Jews fast and attend services at synagogue.

What do your children know about these holidays? What do you know about these holidays? Here are our top five books about Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah for older kids:

Celebrate!: Stories of Jewish Holidays by Gilda Berger and illustrated by Peter Catalanotto

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur by Dana Meachen Rau

Days of Awe: Stories for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur by Eric A. Kimmel

Rosh Hashanah Yom Kippur Survival Kit by Shimon Apisdorf

1001 Questions and Answers on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur by Jeffrey M. Cohen

Are you familiar with any of these titles? What books would you suggest for older kids to learn about these two important Jewish holidays? We'd love to know! Share your ideas on the Scholastic Parents Facebook page, or find Amy on Twitter, @teachmama, and let's continue the conversation!
