Helping Your Community? Now That's BIG!
Clifford The Big Red Dog has been inspiring us to be better citizens with his 10 BIG ideas (Share, Play Fair, Have Respect, Be Kind, Work Together, Be Responsible, Be Truthful, Be A Good Friend, Help Others, and Believe in Yourself) for more than 50 years. Being BIG is about being big hearted; it's about having a big spirit. Being BIG is something we should all do more often!
Clifford has even inspired us here at Scholastic to share with you tips and articles to help teach your kids about community service, whether it be "Extracurricular Extras: What Kids Learn From Community Service," "Civic Service Ideas for Kids," or "Children Changing the World." The rewards young volunteers reap are often as great as the ones they give to others. Most service opportunities teach kids essential skills like long-range planning, working in groups, interacting with people who are different, and defining and solving complex problems. Kids see and hear about terrible things — natural disasters, disease, poverty — and giving them an outlet to help others in need reminds them that they can make a difference.
That is why we're so excited to remind you that "Clifford's BE BIG In Your Community Contest" is a terrific opportunity for you or your child to be recognized for being BIG in your community. To date, the contest has inspired thousands of children, parents, teachers, and community leaders, ranging in age from 2 to 70 years old, to submit their very own BIG service ideas. You can learn about – and be inspired by – them here!
No matter how young your kids are they are never too little to start learning how to make a BIG difference.
We know that every day you are being BIG at home, and we want to hear about it! Click here to enter the contest* – but hurry – we need to hear from you soon; the contest ends this Sunday, June 23, 2013.
Remember, it only takes a little to BE BIG!
