WHAT DID YOU SEE?

ABOUT WARM IN WINTER

Brrr - it's winter and you're starting to shiver from the cold. Shivering makes your muscles move, which warms you up. But only for a while! Shivers are a sign that you need to get out of the cold! How do animals stay warm in the winter? When a bird gets cold it will puff up its feathers to hold in the heat. A walrus keeps warm with the help of a thick layer of blubber. You and I need to put on warm layers of clothes to stay warm outdoors - either that or we come inside!

THIS WAS THE QUESTION...

Your body makes its own heat. But you feel cold when heat moves away from you. Fur, feathers, blubber and clothes are all called insulators because they block the escape of body heat. Can you think of other insulators? We asked you to try an experiment. You can't see heat move (it's invisible!) but you can feel the difference that an insulator makes in stopping your body's heat loss. Put a thick wool glove or sock on one hand. Leave the other hand bare. Then, hold an ice cube in your hand and count to 20. What happened? Which hand felt warmer? Which ice cube melted faster? What did you think would happen if you put a thin stocking on your hand instead of a thick glove?

---------------------------

HERE ARE SOME OF YOUR RESPONSES:

When i put the sock on my right hand. my hand was warmer. when i put the ice in both of my hands, my right hand stayed wamer than my left hand. the ice melted quicker in my left hand than in my right.

We didn't see anything. We felt the air on our hands. The one with the sock on our hands felt warmer than the bare hand. The sock was trapping the heat, and thats why it felt warmer than the bare hand.

I put the glove on and I took the two pieces of ice. Then I held them and counted to 20. The hand with the glove on didn't get as cold as the other one. The ice cube that I was holding in the hand that had the glove on it didn't melt as fast as the one that did not have the glove on it. The heat is coming from my hands!

An igloo made of thick blocks of snow & ice makes a good insulator. Fiberglass, wood, and stone are good insulators. The hand with the glove will not feel the cold & will get warmer because my bodyheat is trapped inside. The hand without the glove will get cold because the is no insulation between my hand and the ice cube.

WE LEARNED THAT THE GLOVE ACTED AS AN INSULATOR. THE ICE IN THE HAND WITH THE GLOVE MELTED SLOWER THAN THE ICE IN THE HAND WITHOUT THE GLOVE. THE HEAT FROM THE LATTER HAND WAS BEING RELEASED WHILE THE HEAT FROM THE GLOVED HAND WAS BEING TRAPPED. THE GLOVE ACTED AS AN INSULATOR JUST LIKE ANIMAL'S SKIN AND THE BIRD'S FEATHERS.
