Mushrooms

Birds

What's a fungus, eats dead plants, and looks like a lobster, but isn't? Give up? It's the lobster mushroom. If you thought all mushrooms looked like the ones on your pizza, you're in for a big surprise. There are thousands of different kinds of mushrooms and they come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Mushrooms can be white, brown, black, tan, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, or violet. There is even a mushroom that glows in the dark! It's called the Jack–o–Lantern mushroom.

Some mushrooms are so small that people can barely see them. A bird's nest mushroom is about the size of your little fingernail. If you look at a bird's nest mushroom with a magnifying glass or under a microscope, you'll see a nest shape filled with what looks like little eggs. On the other hand, some mushrooms are so big they weigh more than the average 4–year old child! The Giant Puffball, for instance, is puffy and round, and can be as big as four or five feet across. Imagine trying to carry around a beach ball that big!

Mushrooms are often named for the things they look like or special characteristics that they have. The honey mushroom got its name because it is honey colored. Inky caps turn black and drip an inky liquid as they get older. What do you think the Cauliflower mushroom looks like? What about a Shaggy Mane?

The first mushroom reminds me continuously of an elephant. I see an elephant's bent head, distinct ears, and a long trunk protruding from the head. The second mushroom looks like a piece of common coral from the Great Barrier Reef. The third mushroom reminds me of something horrible and nameless that I forgot to eat at the cafeteria last year. Ugh! The fourth mushroom reminds me of a red and white polka-dotted umbrella that curves out and shelters it's owner. Not that I'd be particularly thrilled about being stuck in the rain with a mushroom!
