ABOUT YOUR HEART
The heart is a very special muscle. Its job is to push blood through your whole body. Every time your heart beats, it squeezes and pushes blood out of the heart. The blood goes into thin tubes called blood vessels. These vessels carry the blood through your body. The heart keeps pumping blood through your body all the time. The heart keeps beating even when you sleep. On average the heart beats about 100,000 times a day. Sometimes your heart beats faster and sometimes it beats slower.
You can exercise your heart just like any other muscle. Exercise makes your heart stronger. Then it can push more blood around your body with each beat.
THIS WAS THE QUESTION...
Your pulse tells you how fast your heart is beating. You can check your own pulse. Heres how. Sit quietly. Put your second and third fingers on your wrist (on the side of your wrist that is under the thumb). You will feel a beat each time the blood runs through the blood vessel under your skin. You may have to move your fingers around a bit to find the beat. When you find it, count the number of beats in one minute. Have someone else watch the clock while you count the beats. Now do an exercise, like jumping jacks, for one minute. Then check your pulse again.
How is your pulse different before and after you exercise? Why do you think that is? Children have faster pulses than adults. This is true even when children are resting. Babies have even faster pulses. Why do you think that is?
HERE ARE SOME OF YOUR RESPONSES:
I think since adults are so big it takes the blood longer to go through. So since babies are so small it takes less time.
Name: Taylor
Once I did my jumping jacks my heart beat a lot faster. My jumping jacks made my heart work harder. Babies are smaller than kids and adults. Their hearts can pump blood faster through their little bodies. The blood has a shorter way to go before it reaches the heart again. Adults blood has a longer way to go to reach the heart again because they have bigger bodies.
Name: Tony
I see that my lungs have air turning into blood.

Children have faster pulses than Grown-up's pulses because they are younger. Babies have even faster pulses because they are even younger.
Name: Lola
I think why the babies have faster pulses is because when your inside your mommys tummy you do a lot of exercise. The exercise is when you roll around and move that counts as an exercise. Why kids have 100,000 beating pulses because you don't do that much exercise in a day. Why old people have less beating pulses because they barely exercise, well maybe once or twice but not that much as a newborn baby that has more than 100,000 beating pulses.
Name: Jennifer
When you exercise your heart pumps faster. It pumps faster because you're working harder to get blood to all your body parts. Veins help to get blood to the body parts.
Name: Mrs. Golden
Your pulse is different because youre sitting so your pulse is slow, but if you run its faster so you have more heartbeats.

I think that babies heart needs to beat faster because when their babies it needs to be fast.
Name: Becky
I notice that after I exercise my pulse is faster. I think that it is because my heart is working faster to get the oxygen I need and pump blood through my body. I think a baby's pulse rate is faster because it is growing and maybe it needs more blood being pumped through their body. I think adults are slower because they are already developed. It is like a butterfly. When it is about to come out of its cocoon it works hard for hours to get out. That is because all the hard work pumps blood into its wings. That is why they are so developed and big when they come out. That
is my answer. (I think I'm wrong, but oh well.)
Name: Olivia
The younger you are the faster your pulse is because when you're a baby you've just been born so you need to breathe faster to stay alive.
Name: Monica
It gets faster. I know that because our heart has to work faster.
Name: Lisa
I saw that when I stopped doing the jumping-jacks that my pulse went faster then the time that I was relaxing. I think this was because we have smaller hearts.
Name:Tiffany, 12
When you exercise, you need to breathe faster so your heart needs to pump blood faster. The more your muscles work, the more air and blood they need. Your pulse goes faster because your heart beats faster.
