What Is Africa to Me?
http://www.pbs.org/wonders/fr_wh.htm

Studying Africa is an exciting journey into the past — and there are so many ways to travel through this land’s rich history! Start at the dawn of mankind, and follow the story of Africa, learning about evidence that human life began on this continent. Then, through vibrant pictures that embody African voices, learn about the history of the region: early civilizations, influences on Europe, the slave trade, and more.

Africa has endured many changes through the centuries including periods of colonialism  during the 1800s and 1900s. Another dramatic change of the last century was the historic fall of South African apartheid. Leaders like Nelson Mandela led this struggle against racism and discrimination.

During the course of Africa’s long history, hundreds of different languages have developed. Across the large continent weather and landscape is also very different. So when we think of Africa, it’s important to understand the differences  in geography, culture, religion, everyday life, and transportation.

What almost all of Africa does have is a sense of mystery. From the pyramids to the Holy Land  to lost cities , there are wonders in each of the more than 60 territories throughout the continent. Some of the legends and myths are visible in African art such as ceremonial masks  and unique clothing  like the beaded crown.

As you learn more about the land and its people, you can share what Africa means to you.
