Behind every great Disney vacation is the vision of a great scientist. Or artist, or filmmaker, engineer, landscaper, sculptor or writer. Or most likely, all of the above.

Such visionaries work in more than 140 professional disciplines at Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI), the creative force behind Disney parks, resorts, attractions, cruise ships and entertainment venues throughout the world.

Walt Disney Imagineering – the storytellers behind Walt Disney Parks and Resorts – focuses on imagining the future of family entertainment with groundbreaking creativity and technology. Imagineers bring to life fantastic worlds, beloved characters, extraordinary experiences and magical encounters for Disney theme park and resort guests throughout the world.

A Special Role in History

Imagineering played an enormous role in bringing the first Disney theme park – Disneyland in California – to life in 1955. Walt Disney Imagineering, known at the time as WED Enterprises (WED stood for Walter Elias Disney), was formed in 1952 to plan, design and build Disneyland.

The first Imagineers were picked by Walt himself from the Disney Studio's best creative talents, and since that time Walt Disney Imagineering continues to inspire succeeding generations of talented men and women as it develops Disney parks, resorts, cruise ships, hotels and attractions in Florida, California, Tokyo, Paris and Hong Kong.

Imagining the Future

Walt Disney Imagineering continually explores and raises the bar on all forms of guest experiences.

The Blue Sky Studio is a dedicated group of Imagineers who develop new concepts and experiences that may not be seen for five to 10 years. Meanwhile, the Research and Development team routinely unveils innovative special effects and technical magic to blend the digital age with the three-dimensional world of Disney parks and resorts. Magical interactive shows like Stitch Encounter, disappearing icons in the Tokyo DisneySea Tower of Terror, and personalized comments from Roz at Monsters, Inc. Mike and Sulley to the Rescue! at Disney California Adventure all use state-of-the-art technology to enhance the guest experience.

With the opening of Toy Story Mania! at Disney California Adventure and Disney's Hollywood Studios, Walt Disney Imagineering is merging video gaming and storytelling to create a unique ride-game experience like no other, immersing players in the world of "Toy Story" and beloved characters Woody and Buzz.

Within the industry, Walt Disney Imagineering is seen as uniquely dedicated to innovation and creativity, continually building on its legacy of storytelling to pioneer new forms of entertainment.
