SCHOLASTIC 2012 FAMILY OF THE YEAR CONTEST

WHO CAN ENTER: NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. A PURCHASE WILL NOT INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING. The Scholastic Family of the Year Contest (the "Contest") is open to current legal residents of the 50 United States (including D.C.) who are over the age of 18 at the time of entry, who are a member of a family ("family," solely for the eligibility purposes of this Contest, is defined as at a minimum being the entrant and at least one child who is 12 or under at the time of entry and who the entrant is the parent and/or legal guardian of) and who along with the above-referenced child has made a difference/given back/done outstanding deeds as set forth below, except employees (and their immediate families and those living in the same household of each employee, whether or not related) of Scholastic Inc. ("Scholastic" or "Sponsor") and its parents, affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising and promotion agencies, promotional partners and all others associated with the development, promotion and execution of this Contest. Contest subject to all applicable federal, state, and local laws. Void in Puerto Rico, the U.S. territories and possessions and where prohibited or restricted by law.

HOW TO ENTER: Entries will be accepted starting 12:01 a.m. on November 1, 2011 up until 11:59 p.m. ET on March 15, 2012 (the "Entry Period"). Entrants and/or Nominating Individuals will be required to submit an essay (up to 500 words) describing how the Family (i) makes a difference in the lives of others, (ii) gives back to the community and/or (iii) has done an outstanding deed or deeds. Entrants and/or Nominating Individuals have the option, but are not required, to upload up to three photos and/or a video clip up to five minutes (which cannot be more than 10 megabytes in size), that support the information they supply in the essay. Entries may be submitted online by visiting www.Scholastic.com/familyoftheyear and filling out the entire entry form, including submission of the essay and attaching any photographs or video in electronic form. Entrants and/or Nominating Individuals entering online will be required to establish a username and password on the above web site prior to being able to submit an entry. Use of any automated entry device is prohibited and all such entries are void. Entry (i) must be Entrant's and/or Nominating Individual's own original work, and cannot contain previously published and/or copyrighted material in any part by any 3rd party, (ii) must be in keeping with Scholastic's image and may not be offensive or inappropriate, as determined by Scholastic in its sole discretion, (iii) cannot defame or invade publicity rights or privacy of any person, living or deceased, or otherwise infringe upon any person's personal or property rights or any other third party rights, (iv) must be accurate and (v) if submitted by a Nominating Individual, the Nominating Individual has the right to grant the permissions set forth herein and share the information contained in the entry. Any Entrant and/or Nominating Individual submitting any photographs and/or video in connection with the Contest represents and warrants that he/she has all necessary permissions as to those photographs and/or the video in order to grant the rights set forth herein. Scholastic reserves the right to disqualify any entry it deems to be offensive, inappropriate, or not in keeping with Scholastic's image, in its sole discretion. All entries, including any rights in and to any photograph and video submissions, become the property of Scholastic and will not be returned.

Entrants and/or Nominating Individuals can also enter by mailing in their essay to Scholastic at the following address: Scholastic Family of the Year, P.O. Box 711, New York, NY 10013. As with the online entry, mail-in Entrants and/or Nominating Individuals can also submit up to three photos (hardcopies) and a video clip up to five minutes in length on DVD, but are not required to. Mail-in entries must be received by March 15, 2012.

If a Family enters on their own, but is also nominated, the Judges will only consider the Family's entry. If a Family is nominated by multiple Nominating Individuals, the Judges will only consider one entry, chosen in their sole discretion.

JUDGING: The potential winner will be selected from among all eligible entries received by a Scholastic Parent & Child editors based on a number of factors, including: clarity of essay, amount of personal time invested in making a difference and/or giving back to the community and the impact of entrant's efforts. The decisions of the judges are final and binding. Scholastic reserves the right to not award all prizes if, in its sole discretion, it does not receive a sufficient number of qualified and eligible entries.

GRAND PRIZE: One (1) Grand Prize winner (the "Winner") and his/her immediate family (the "Family") will: (i) be photographed for and will appear on the cover, reverse cover, second cover, or gatefold cover (chosen at Scholastic's sole discretion) of the June/July 2012 issue of Scholastic Parent & Child magazine; (ii) be featured in an article inside the June/July 2012 issue; (iii) will receive a trip to New York City at the approximate time of the issue's appearance on newsstands to participate in an event celebrating the Family of the Year (as described below); and (iv) will receive $20,000 worth of series I savings bonds (the "Savings Bonds") to be paid out over a two-year period (see Savings Bonds restrictions below). For purposes of the photograph portion of the prize, the Grand Prize Winner's Immediate Family may consist of a maximum of another adult immediate family member and children who the Grand Prize Winner/other adult immediate family member are the parents/legal guardians of, one of which must be the child who was included in the essay by the Entrant/Nominating Individual. The three-day/two-night trip for the Winner and his/her Family shall include roundtrip coach airfare from the gateway airport nearest the Winner's residence (except if Winner resides within 100 miles or less of New York City, in which case ground transportation may be provided at Scholastic's sole discretion), hotel lodging and three meals per day, and all airport transfers in New York (collectively, the "Trip"). For purposes of the Trip portion of the prize, the Grand Prize Winner's Immediate Family may consist of a maximum of another adult immediate family member and three children who the Grand Prize Winner/other adult immediate family member are the parents/legal guardians of, one of which must be the child who was included in the essay by the Entrant/Nominating Individual. Approximate retail value for the Grand Prize: $24,000 (ARV will vary depending upon point of departure, fluctuations of hotel rates and airfares).

SECONDARY PRIZES: Two (2) runners up (along with the Grand Prize Winner, collectively the "Winners") and his/her Immediate Family will: (i) be featured in an article inside the June/July 2012 Issue or on Sponsor's website; (ii) will receive a $1,000 series I savings bond (the "Runner-Up Savings Bonds") (one Runner-Up Savings Bond total, regardless of the number of Immediate Family members); and (iii) Scholastic will donate $1,000 worth of books to the school, library or community organization of each runners' up choosing (Scholastic reserves the right to review and approve the organization of choice). The runners up and his/her Immediate Family can consist of a maximum of two adults and three children, one of which must be the runners up's child who is 12 years old or under and who was included in the essay by the Entrant/Nominating Individual and the other members must also be members of the runner's immediate family. Approximate retail value for the secondary prize: $2,000 each.

GENERAL PRIZE AND AWARD RESTRICTIONS: Any and all federal, state, and local taxes, where applicable, are the sole responsibility of the Winners. No cash equivalents, substitutions, transfers, or assignments of prizes or awards are allowed, except by Scholastic, who reserves the right to substitute a prize or award (or portion thereof) of comparable or greater value, at its sole discretion. The Winners and their Immediate Families agree to provide Scholastic with reasonable assistance in connection with the article that will appear in the June/July 2012 issue of Scholastic Parent & Child magazine, including agreeing to allow their photograph(s) to be used inside the magazine. Further, the Winners and their Immediate Families must be available to be photographed for the Scholastic Parent & Child magazine during a window approximately one-month after the Prizes are awarded, which will be at a location around the Winners' residences, such date and time to be reasonably agreed to by the Winners and Scholastic.

TRIP RESTRICTIONS: Actual value of Trip may vary based on point of departure and dates and of travel. The Grand Prize Winner is solely responsible for all Trip expenses not specified herein as being awarded, including, without limitation, flight changes, ground transportation, taxes, meals, beverages, incidentals and gratuities. Travel must be made through Scholastic, on a carrier of Scholastic's choice. The Grand Prize Winner and his/her Immediate Family will be required to provide valid government issued photographic ID and/or other required travel documents, such as a valid passport, at time of travel. The Grand Prize Winner and his/her Immediate Family are responsible for obtaining travel documents. The Grand Prize Winner and his/her Immediate Family must be available to travel between May 15, 2012 and June 15, 2012. If Grand Prize Winner and/or his/her Immediate Family are unable to travel within the specified time period, Grand Prize Winner agrees to forfeit prize immediately so it can be reassigned. Certain travel restrictions may apply.

SAVINGS BOND RESTRICTIONS: The Grand Prize Winner will be required to designate two (2) Immediate Family members to receive the Savings Bonds. The two designated recipients will each receive a $5,000 Savings Bond when the Grand Prize Winner is announced in June 2012. The two designated recipients will each receive a second $5,000 Savings Bond in January 2013 to reach the $20,000 total. In the event that one or both of the designated recipients has already received the bond limit through other gifts or purchases, the Saving Bonds will be issued in subsequent years until the $20,000 total is reached. The runner-up winners must each designate one Immediate Family member to receive the Runner Up Savings Bond, which he/she will receive in full when the Winners are announced in June 2012. In the event that the runner up winners cannot accept the Runner Up Savings Bond in 2012 due to government bond limits, the Runner Up Savings Bond will be paid out in January 2013. All bonds are subject to terms, conditions and fees as set out by the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

NOTIFICATION/ANNOUNCEMENT: The Winners will be notified on or about April 15, 2012 by telephone, mail and/or e-mail. Each potential winner and his/her Immediate Family members that will share in the Prizes and will be required to sign and return an Affidavit of Eligibility and Liability/Publicity Release within fourteen (14) days of issuance or prize may be forfeited and, at Scholastic's discretion, awarded to a runner-up. If a Prize or Prize notification is returned as undeliverable, the potential winner chooses to decline the Prize for any reason, or the potential winner and/or his/her family members that will share in the Prize fail to comply with these Official Rules and all the requirements set forth herein, the Prize may be forfeited and, at Scholastic's discretion, awarded to a runner-up. By accepting the Prize, the Winners and their Immediate Family grant to Scholastic and its designees the right to use their names, likenesses, hometowns, biographical information (including school names), and entry, including photographs and/or video, for purposes of advertising and promotional purposes in any and all media now or hereafter known throughout the world in perpetuity without further notice, permission, or compensation, except where prohibited by law. The potential winners acknowledge and agree that they shall provide Scholastic with reasonable assistance, including documentation, required by Scholastic to verify any and all elements of Entrant's/Nominating Individual's submission prior to Scholastic granting the Prizes to the Winners. If a potential winner fails to provide such reasonable assistance, the Prize may be forfeited and, at Scholastic's discretion, awarded to a runner-up.

USE OF ENTRY: By submitting an entry, including any photographs and/or video submitted with the entry, each Entrant and Nominating Individual agrees Scholastic shall own the entry submitted (including all rights embodied therein in the winning entry) and that it and its designees may exploit, edit, publish, use, adapt, modify, or dispose of any entry and elements embodied therein, online, in print, film, television, or in any other media now or hereafter known for advertising, promotional, or other purposes throughout the world, in perpetuity, without additional compensation or notification to, or permission of the Entrant and/or Nominating Individual, except as prohibited by law.

GENERAL CONDITIONS: By entering, Entrant and Nominating Individual agree to release and hold harmless Scholastic and its respective parents, affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising, and promotion agencies, promotional parties, airline, ground transportation and travel companies and all others associated with the development, promotion and execution of this Contest, and the respective officers, directors, shareholders, agents, and employees of the foregoing (collectively, the "Released Parties") from any and all claims, injuries, damages, or losses to the person or property and/or liabilities of any nature that in any way arise from participation in this Contest or acceptance or use of the Grand Prize (including any travel related hereto). The Grand Prize Winner and his/her Immediate Family agree that they may be required by Scholastic, in its sole discretion, to participate in a public relations event, and this event may occur in a city other than where the Grand Prize Winner and his/her Immediate Family reside. If the event requires travel, Scholastic will book all of the travel and pay for all reasonable travel expenses for the Grand Prize Winner and his/her Immediate Family pursuant to Scholastic's travel and expense policy. The date and time of the event will be reasonably agreed to by the Grand Prize Winner and Scholastic.

In the event the Contest is compromised by non-authorized human intervention, virus, bugs, or other causes beyond the control of Scholastic which corrupts or impairs the administration, security, fairness, or proper play of the Contest, Scholastic reserves the right in its sole discretion to modify, suspend, or terminate the Contest or any portion thereof and/or terminate the participation of any participant (and void his/her entry) whose conduct potentially compromises the Contest and at its sole discretion to award the any or all of the Prizes from among all eligible non-suspect entries received prior to termination using the judging procedures outlined above. In the event of a dispute over the identity of an online Entrant and/or Nominating Individual, entry will be deemed submitted by the holder of the e-mail account. Released Parties are not responsible for late, lost, stolen, inaccurate, garbled, damaged, illegible, undelivered, delayed, misdirected, or postage-due entries or mail; interrupted or unavailable network, server, Internet Service Provider (ISP), website, or other connections; for lack of availability or accessibility, or miscommunications due to failed computer, satellite, telephone, or cable transmissions or lines; for technical failure or jumbled, scrambled, delayed, or misdirected transmissions; for computer hardware or software malfunctions, failures, or difficulties; or for any other computer, network, technical, typographical, human or other error, problem, or malfunction related to or in connection with the Contest, including, without limitation, errors, problems, or malfunctions that may occur in connection with the administration of the Contest, the announcement of the prize, the processing or judging of entries, or any Contest-related materials. Released Parties are not responsible for any incorrect or inaccurate information, whether caused by site users, tampering, hacking, or by any equipment or programming associated with or utilized in the Contest and assume no responsibility for any injury or damage to participants' or to any other persons' computer (whether hardware or software), relating to or resulting from downloading materials or software in connection with this Contest.
