A Month of Ideas
By Mary Seehafer Sears
Keep boredom at bay every single day! Print this calendar and hang it where your child can see it. Or cut up the squares and put them in a jar; pull it out when you hear those not-so-magic words (“I’m bored” or “There’s nothing to do”). Challenge your child to come up with his own ideas to add to the mix!

1
Feed the birds and squirrels with birdseed, sesame seeds, raisins, and peanuts.
2
Have a pretend beauty salon. Do each other’s hair — or even your dog’s.
3
Decide on a family song, and make everyone learn it. You might even stage an American Idol-style contest!
4
Pretend your house is for sale. Write an ad describing all its attributes.
5
Give new names to all your mom’s or sister’s lipsticks and nail polishes. (Ask permission first!)
6
Have a film festival. Rent 2 or 3 movies sharing the same theme, or borrow them from the library. Or check out movies based on books
7
Play school by setting up a pretend classroom. Teach siblings or pals a new skill.
8
Find a kazoo and call it the “calamity kazoo.” Blow it every time someone in the family messes up.
9
Pre-make a salad and English muffin pizzas; toss and toast at dinnertime.
10
Make a collage based on a favorite theme, like roller coasters or turtles.
11
Paint the garage door as a family.
12
Write a newsletter of what happened this week to everyone in the house. Save it to read next year.
13
Buy a compass and mark each side of your house with north, south, east, and west (use a piece of paper, a rock, or some other non-permanent sign).
14
Think of a new name for everyone in the family and use those names all day if you can.
15
Make a still life from all the fruits and vegetables in the fridge. Then draw it, if you like.
16
Write a letter to a friend who’s moved away, or surprise someone nearby with mail.
17
Research big events that happened during the years that each family member was born. Does anyone share a birthday with someone famous?
18
Buy new toothbrushes and try a new toothpaste. Variety is the spice of life.
19
Use the kitchen or bathroom scale to find things around the house that weigh 1 pound, 2 pounds, 3 pounds, and so on.
20
Bake cookies or mini cupcakes and deliver them to a firehouse, nursing home, or your favorite shopkeeper or neighbor.
21
Stargaze with a map of the heavens cut out of the newspaper or printed from the Internet.
22
Count and roll all the coins in the house, bring them to the bank, and buy ice cream with the proceeds.
23
Make a terrarium with dirt, moss, and plant cuttings in an empty jar with holes punched in the top. Keep moist.
24
Take everyone’s pulse at different times of the day. Make a chart.
25
Cover a box with seashells or other craft materials. Put something dear to you inside.
26
Toast marsh-mallows and smoosh them between chocolate grahams. Yum!
27
Think of a family goal and write it on a piece of paper: ”Our family has a dream. We would like to...” Work towards your goal.
28
Paint everyone’s toenails.
29
Invite a friend over to bake something yummy.
30
Plant a garden and water the lawn.
31
Jog around the block and see what’s going on. Report back on your findings.
