We thought that we were gonna be okay. Pa was at work all this week, as they fired all the people around him. They were firing people one by one, day by day. Then, just when he thought that he MIGHT make it through, he got the boot. 4 o'clock, just as he was leaving for the weekend...What'll he and Mama do? There are 8 of us! And Mama can't work beyond doing what little tailoring she does after the little ones are in bed. Are we gonna starve? Or are we gonna end up hiching rides on trains, like Amy's family is doing, so that Pa can try to find work? It won't be easy for him. We havn't got much money, and the only job he's ever done is the construction work. But now, rich people ain't paying to have stuff built...Without stuff being built, Pa don't got no work.
