From Riches to Gutter-Rats

By: Mathias B
Maryland, Grade: 7

Everyday I think about it and when I do,it pains my stomach, the pain is even worse than the serving of bread and mushy cornmeal I get daily.I once had my life-savings,my parents and my home.I used to live in a huge mansion in the Five Star Neighborhood, others called it the Rich Island because of the river that seperates the neighborhood from downtown. It was a glorious site to see it from the Ferry, the beautiful large white houses with the decks and pools in the backyard, and the clear glass windows in every house made it look heavenly, but now it dosen't look that good at all and that was all because of the Stock Market.Less than one week ago,the Stock Market buckled and collapsed under it's own weight and this marked the start of the Great Depression,my parents lost their life savings and their fortune and we couldn't pay any bill that came towards us,so we lost everything except the clothes we had on our backs,my Father told my Mother and I to get to the downtown area where we stayed in an alley. Then my parents abandoned me and I was left alone. But all of that is over because of the new President that was elected,President Roosevelet.I found my parents and we got our home back and now we are a happy family.
