Dust Bowl

By: Macie S
Illinois, Grade: 6

July 27 Friday
Today was harsh. The winds blew in from the west and thrashed black, thick, dust all over our house. The dust seemed to find every nook and cranny to creep its way into. we had to cover our faces with wet towels so we could breathe. we were in the middle of breakfast when it started, and by the time it was over our dishes were packed with 6 inches or more of dust. I sure hope betty, jake and their family are okay. last week they lost 3 of their caddle. their daddy doesnt talk much anymore, he says theres no point, being as it is, nothing good to talk about. we will probably have to clean the school house again, that is if we can get out the door, with all the dust. we wouldnt even have to be going to school now, accept this dust just keeps on a steady pace, causing us to miss days that we dont wanna make up. hopefully all that black in the sky isnt just dust, i doubt it, but maybe some of it is clouds. waiting to pour rain on us for a week. we could sure use all that and more. long as it went at a slow pace, not washing away our already parched, and half ruined crops. momma says i have to go help her in the garden before school, since she is expecting and cant do much anymore.
