Goodbye Cocoa

By: Megan S
Washington, Grade: 8

January 9
Dear Diary,
Mama had to shoot Cocoa today. She said that we didn't have enough money to support ourselves, let alone a horse. I yelled at her to stop, that I was sorry, and that I would do twice as much work so we could afford to keep Cocoa, but she said the best thing to do was to put the poor, starving horse out of his misery. I wonder why my greatgrand-parents came here to America in the first place? All America has done for us is take our money and leave us to scratch a living off rocks. There isn't enough money to pay the dues at school anymore, so I just stay home now. This morning we all split an egg for breakfast. ONE egg!! I'm not used to this, dear diary. Not used to this life at all. I wished My great-grandparents had stayed in Poland...
Thanks for listening,
Marlie
