Times Are Bad

By: Josey J
West Virginia, Grade: 5

Seems like all the fields once feeled with corn are one big deserd streched by my house. The flowers once planted under my window look like a weed shribled up.There ain`t much of anything live and knowone has any money since papa died last winter.Ma says were gonna get through this if old bess [the cow]lives.Boy I could realy go for some quail about now though.Joseph says if I don`t think of bad things they won`t happen, but realy it`s hard not to wonder.Baby Laura caught cold and is sick.We can`t pay for a doctor and we have no horses to ride into town.Every morning I study the hill for any sign of animal then I look to the creek and towards the field but there isn`t the last little fur or feathered coat in site. Jane and Mary gather the last of the fruit off the trees and Rose watches baby Laura while Ma is sewing up all our charch clothes. Joseph gets what weat he can from the Howards feild tey pay him 2 nickels while I keep look out for any animals that come.At night I always think of pa and how he always made do with so little.I always fall a sleep to the whistle of the hot air blowing.
