Fighting To Survive

By: Clara A
Kentucky, Grade: 7

September 5, 1933

It is 1933 in Tulsa, Oklohoma. My name is Rose Jonrea. I live with my Mom in a small, one room house. I used to live in a bigger house, but ever since WWI, we've all been forced to send our men to war. My brother and Daddy died in that war. That ment that we had to move to a smaller home on a more rural part of town. We've been hit by the Great Depression. America wasn't in too good shape anyway at about 1931 because of WWI, by 1932 we weren't getting any better off. Then the stock markets crashed. It was the biggest crash ever.
Billions of dollars were lost and many people went bankrupt. Even some banks are closing daily. Mom and I, we don't have much spare money, so we go to the soup kitchen every other day to get ourselves some food. Mom is a seamstress for the sewing company here in Tulsa. That's the only way we can keep a home. My little brother Samuel, he's 18 months, had to learn to eat the same food we do because we can't afford that fancy baby food. But my uncle Roger is coming down from California to visit us and maybe bring us back with him. He says he can help us to get more stable. I hope he's right. I don't ever want to be taken from Mom. That's all for now. I'll write more later.

Yours Truly,
Rose
