My Life in 1923

Monday, December 14, 1923 I don't know when the Great Depression started. Father came home very upset today. The bank had closed. We had lost all our life's savings and we were now penniless. Friday, December 18, 1923 I never thought the Dust Bowl would hit. But it did. I rode Stardust, my mare, today. Tomorrow Stardust is taking me to California. Monday, December 21, 1923 On to California. I don't think I can bear to leave Kentucky. My last Christmas in Kentucky was last year. Yesterday I said good-bye forever. Friday, December 25, 1923 Christmas in California. Even though it was painful saying good-bye forever to Kentucky, I never thought I'd live to see California. And my parents have been promised a horse farm called Whitebrook in the so-called Alta California. I do like the pretty sights...
