From riches to rags

By: Anneliese B
Minnesota, Grade: 5

Today, September 26, 1936, my mom has decided to run a boarding house. I don't know we are going to run a boarding house, but mom has told me to move into the attic, which i don't seem to mind, but we only have so much room. Hopefully, we can get people to share rooms, or even share my attic. I wish dad was here, but he is off in Montana planting trees for the CCC, he sends half of his money to me and mom. Ever since dad lost his job at the car dealership 3 years ago, our lives have been tough, but i don't know how we were able to keep paying the mortgage. Since money has been tight, my clothes either don't fit or are falling to pieces, but somehow mom has found my older sisters old clothes, 3 trunks full of Vanessa's clothes, shoes, and coats, while cleaning out the attic for me! Vanessa was 6 years older than me, and died 16 months ago, when I was still 9 years old, Vanessa has just turn 16, now I'm 10 years old. Now mom is telling me to start packing up my stuff, so I will be ready to move into the attic. Hopefully, mom will help me set up the attic.
