Slavery was held in the South before the Civil War. They were sold and treated like things, instead of people. It was cruel and inhumane. They got no pay for the work they did every day. Some slaves attacked their owner, for example, Nat Turner. After the Civil War there was a period of time called Reconstruction. The 13th Amendment says that slavery is banned from the United State territory. The 14th Amendment stated that all people born in the US are citizens and have equal protection under the law. The 15th Amendment stated that all men could vote. But you have to know how to read and write.
