What we have to do to stay alive...

By: Evelyn P
New Hampshire, Grade: 5

Today, is the last time I sleep with my family. Tomorrow, I board a train going South somewhere. I don't want to know about the place I will be going soon. Right now, I want to be with my family. It's all I can do not to cry.
We've been hungry for more than a month. Mother tries to get food, but mostly returns empty handed.
So I stepped forward to support my family. Since my Father is dead from drinking, only I can support my family.
My oldest sibling is only nine, and I'm only twelve. But it's only enough to find work.
I'm going south, toward a rich lady. She didn't suffer from the Great Depression like we did. I will sleep there, and serve as her maid. I will, of course, send back money to my family.
I will miss them, a lot.
Oh, the things we have to do for our loved ones...
