EMILY'S DIARY

By: Malery R
New York, Grade: 8

June 12th 1933:

Sadly, my mother is very ill. Her nurse sent us a letter, and we received it today. It says that ma fainted, and needed to rest in bed. Oh how I wish I was there! Maybe I could've brought her a small bite of food and a cup of water, although we don't have much money for all of that. She's all the way in Colorado, I wish she stood with father and I, maybe she wouldn't have been so bad. At the moment, I'm working at a factory across the street from home, or should I say. The house we live in is not actually ours, we just rented two rooms, because we cannot afford anything more. Anyhow, the factory is very dirty and many people have died from deep needle wounds. Once, Father cut his hand while sewing clothes, and I was very frightened. The owners of the factory are very cruel and mean, they shout at you and don't care if you faint, or even let you take a break. I have to work 10 hours a day, and father works 11 hours. My pay is a dime, while dad gets a dime and a penny. Oh, how I wish I lived in somewhere other than New York, I shall keep praying and hope mother gets better.
