January 13,1929
Dear diary,
Pa lost his job last week so I had to quit school to work as a maid for Mister Gramham. I dislike him very much, but Ma said that we need the money, and this was the best way to get some. The family depends on me, because Ma is too weak and sick and my little sister Mary is too small. Even though I work for many hours, I know that I have to keep on working. I just hope for Ma to get better and for Pa to find work and for me to go to school again.
