Every day another unfortunate soul is swept out onto the streets. No one pays any attention to us except to brush our fingers off the edge of their cloaks. They avoid us, maybe because they know they could be us tomorrow- dirty and begging on the streets for anything. A piece of roll, a couple beans, I would even take just a penny. A penny can get you soup from the Café on Main street, but there has been talk in that alley about how the owner is going to raise it to a nickel, a dime. It’s much harder to come by a nickel and a dime than one penny. My, how times change- once a schoolteacher now on the streets writing this in the dirt because someone else said they would take less money.
