The Depression

By: Parker S
Louisiana, Grade: 6

My family and I were heading to California because our farm was taken by a bank. While we were on our way father saw a cloud of dust and told us to put wash clothes over our mouths. It took us around thirty minutes to get through the storm. On the other side of the storm we were all flabbergasted at what we saw. No trees, undergrowth, brush, vegitation, and life, except for our own. After we went through that storm we tied the wash clothes around our mouths and noses to be safe. The truck, food, and garments was covered in dust. Half of our rations were spoiled. Before we left town father heard that there were dust storms and some people could get dust pneumonia because the dust went into their lungs. Many other of my friends were heading to California for a better life like my family. When will father start driving and let me rest? What was that loud popping sound, it was louder than when our truck backfires. We lost another tire and it took a lot of hard work to lift the truck, take off the tire, and lightly set it on the ground.
