Jobs go down in the Dumps

By: Allison B
Florida, Grade: 5

Yesterday my father was working a hard life in the Great Depression, but he was a happy as could be! Today he came home with a frown on his face. I was wondering what was happening. At supper time, Mother had made fried chicked with mashed potatoes and peas. Yummy!! Father said that we wouldn't be having good meals like this one anymore. I hated to question Why, but I did. Father explained to us what happened today at work. He said that he had lost his job. From then on we had to work as hard as we could. We had to plant vegtables and fruits in our garden, we had to buy some chickens, so we could eat and have eggs, and alot more. Since Father had lost his job, we had to make our house a broading home. I had to move my room to the basement.
