Bread Line

There are always so many people at the bread line. Ever since dad lost his job at the bank, he has to go to the bread line every day to get enough food to feed Sarah, James, Ma,me, himself, and Grandmom. Today, I get to go with him. There are so many people here! All of them are tired and hungry. And all because of President Hoover! Thank goodness FDR is our president now. Grandmom says that he is the best thing that this country has seen for a long time. Ma says that President FDR will whip this country back into shape and everyone will have a job. It's our turn to get food now. We get two loaves of bread, a bottle of milk, some soup, and a wedge of cheese. It's not much, but it's enough. Pa gives me a loaf of bread to carry and the cheese. As we pass the rest of the line to go home, I see a girl about my age looking at me with big, black eyes. She has no food. I give her the bread and cheese and she smiles at me. It's a soft, sweet smile, the kind that fills you up and makes you all warm inside. Pa said to me as we were walking home,
