Scoring An Oral Fluency Assessment (OFA)

An assessment system must be in place that signals reading difficulty early and prevents early reading risk from becoming entrenched reading failure (National Research Council, 1998; Torgesen, 1998).

Assessments like an Oral Fluency Assessment will help you understand your children's reading fluency strengths and weaknesses. This understanding will allow you to target instruction more skillfully.

What Is an Oral Fluency Assessment Norm? A norm is a standardized score that is determined through the collection of scores of many different children at the same grade or age level. An OFA is generally administered for the first time in the middle of first grade. The oral fluency norms used here are derived from classrooms across the country over many years by fluency experts Roland Good, Ed Kame'enui, Mark Shinn, Gary Germann, and associates. These norms are updated every school year.

What Do the Percentiles Indicate? Percentiles indicate the percentage of students that received scores equal to or lower than the raw score. For example, if a second grader's median raw score for the middle of the year is 76, that student is reading just above the 50th percentile, which is on grade level for that time of year. Children reading at the 50th percentile of fluency generally have good reading comprehension of grade-level texts.
