story and make a thought-provoking connection between two ideas.

DELL HAIKU CONTEST OFFICIAL RULES

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. A purchase will not increase the chances of winning. The DELL HAIKU CONTEST (“Contest”) starts on October 7, 2011, and ends on November 18, 2011. All entries must be submitted online at www.scholastic.com/dellhaiku and must be received by 11:59 p.m. EST on November 18, 2011.

How to Enter. To enter the Contest, students in grades 7–12, aged 13 and over at the time of entry, should write an original haiku in an unrhyming, 5-7-5 style that answers the following question: What adventures does your future hold?

Completed entries must be submitted online at www.scholastic.com/dellhaiku. Students will fill out the online entry form and type in their original haiku. The entry form must include the following information: student name, grade, date of birth, email address, phone number, and home address including city, state, zip code.

Entries must be original works. Furthermore, an entry may not defame or invade publicity rights or the privacy rights of any person, living or deceased, or otherwise infringe upon any person’s personal or property rights or any other third-party rights. Scholastic reserves the right to disqualify any entry it deems to be offensive, inappropriate, or not in keeping with Scholastic’s and Dell’s images, in their sole discretion.

Eligibility. The Contest is open only to students in grades 7–12 who are 13 or older at the time of entry, and attend a public school, accredited private school, or home school in compliance with the regulations/laws of its state of residence in the United States (one of the 50 states or Washington, D.C.) (collectively, “Territory”). Employees of Scholastic and Dell, and members of their immediate families living in the same household, their parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, and their advertising, promotion, and production agencies, are not eligible to enter. There is no limit to the number of entries a student can submit, but each student may only win one prize.

All personal information collected will be retained in accordance with Scholastic’s records retention policies for the Contest (all entries will be kept for one year following selection of the winner; all winning entries will be kept for up to three years). Any such personal information collected via online entry will also be subject to Scholastic’s Privacy Policy. By submitting an entry in this Contest, you understand and consent to the collection, maintenance, processing, and transfer of your information in and to the United States and other countries and territories. You acknowledge and agree that such information may be available to United States authorities or otherwise accessed in accordance with United States federal or applicable state law.

With respect to Dell’s need to arrange for publicity as it relates to the Contest, all personal information collected from the winners will be subject to the company’s Privacy Policy.

Scholastic and Dell are not responsible for late, lost, stolen, inaccurate, garbled, damaged, illegible, undelivered, delayed, or misdirected entries or for interrupted or unavailable network, server, Internet Service Provider (ISP), website, or other connections; for lack of availability or accessibility, or miscommunications due to failed computer, satellite, telephone, or cable transmissions or lines; for technical failure or jumbled, scrambled, delayed, or misdirected transmissions; for computer hardware or software malfunctions, failures, or difficulties; or for any other computer, network, technical, typographical, human or other error, problem, or malfunction related to or in connection with the Contest.

Entries: By submitting an entry, each entrant agrees that if his or her entry is selected as a winner, Dell shall own the entry submitted (including all rights embodied therein in winning entries) and that it and its designees may exploit, edit, publish, use, adapt, modify, or dispose of any entry and elements embodied therein, online, in print, film, television, or in any other media now or hereafter known for advertising, promotional, or other purposes throughout the world, in perpetuity, without additional compensation or notification to, or permission of the entrant, except as prohibited by law.

Judging Criteria: All entries will be judged equally based on the following four criteria: 25% 5-7-5 haiku form, 25% how well the haiku addresses the topic, 25% how well the haiku inspires readers to think about the story behind the words, and 25% spelling and grammar.

Selection of winners: Entries submitted will be judged by Scholastic and Dell. Three winners will be notified on or about December 1, 2011. Each entrant agrees to be bound by the Official Rules, and the decisions of the judges are final in all matters relating to this Contest. An authorized representative on behalf of the winners will be required to sign and return an affidavit of eligibility and liability/publicity release within ten (10) business days of notification attempt or an alternative winner may be selected. Dell and Scholastic Inc. reserve the right to not select a winner or select fewer than three winners if none or not enough of the entries are deemed of sufficient quality based on the criteria.

By entering, each entrant hereby releases and holds harmless Scholastic, Dell, and their respective parents, affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising and promotion agencies prize suppliers, and all others associated with the development and execution of this Contest, and the respective officers, directors, shareholders, agents, and employees of the foregoing (collectively, the “Released Parties”) from any and all claims, demands, losses, promises, causes of action, and liabilities arising out of the preparation for or participation in this Contest, or any use/misuse of any prize (or any portion thereof) awarded hereunder, including any travel or activity related thereto.

Scholastic and Dell assume no responsibility or liability for the selection of any winner. The Contest entry and/or acceptance of any prizes constitutes a release of Scholastic and Dell from such responsibilities and liabilities.

Prizes: Three student winners will be selected to win the following prizes from Dell Inc.: 1st Prize: Alienware™ M11x Laptop (ARV: $1,019.99); 2nd Prize: Inspiron™ duo Tablet PC (ARV: $549.99); 3rd Prize: Dell Streak™ 7 Android™ Tablet Wi-Fi (ARV: $349.99). Service plans will not be included with Streak 7.

No cash substitutions for prizes. In the event of prize unavailability, a prize of equal or greater value will be awarded as determined in Sponsor’s sole discretion. Prizes are nontransferable. All federal, state, and local taxes, if any, are the sole responsibility of the winners. Void where restricted or prohibited.

General: By entering, entrants agree to abide by these Official Rules, warrant and represent that their entries are original work and grant to Scholastic and Dell the right to use the winner’s name, information provided and likeness in any media now or hereafter known for advertising, promotion, and/or other purposes throughout the world without additional compensation or notification to, or permission of the entrant, except as prohibited. If Scholastic and/or Dell discover at any time, during or after the Contest, that an entry contained infringing material, the entry will be immediately disqualified and will be obligated to immediately return any and all prizes that may have been awarded to them in connection with their entry.

In the event the Contest is compromised by non-authorized human intervention, virus, bugs, or other causes beyond the control of Sponsor that corrupts or impairs the administration, security, fairness, or proper play of the Contest, Sponsor reserves the right in its sole discretion to modify, suspend, or terminate the Contest or any portion thereof and/or terminate the participation of any participant (and void his/her entry) whose conduct potentially compromises the Contest and at its sole discretion to award the prizes from among all eligible non-suspect entries received prior to termination using the judging procedures outlined above.
