Dear Little Book,
Yesterday Doctor Thomas was summoned to examine all of the afflicted girls together. He spent several hours examining everyone - Martha, Elizabeth, Anne Shelton and Ann Bishop. When he emerged from each girl's house, he kept silent, even though all of the town's people shouted their questions at him as he made his rounds. Later, he announced that because he had found no physical evidence for their strange behavior, that they must indeed be possessed by Satan and swift action must be taken if they were to be saved. Reverend Parris has insisted that each night the whole town come together in prayer for the girls, and we must also fast to rid our bodies of the devil's curse.

Last night I dreamt of the sinister dog once again. I could see him creeping towards my bed, and I wanted to flee. But it was as if my body were made of stone, and I had not the strength to lift it upright. Only my tears moved freely, as they streamed down my face and soaked my pillow. When the dog reached my bed, I begged him for mercy. And then he spoke to me. "Idle minds house the devil," he said. "Be aware, and be true, for next they come to accuse you." And with that, he vanished.

Oddly, I felt a strange sense of calm after the dream -- as if I were under the watchful eye of the dog, rather than haunted by him. I can't say why I am comforted by that, but I dare tell no one of my nighttime visitor. Not even Mother and Father. I must take care to appear that I have all of my wits about me, and I must keep to myself ...

Oh, I must go. There was just a knock at the door and Mother has called and I think I heard the voice of reverend Parris ...
