Dear Little Book,
The Witchcraft Fever
is spreading through Salem faster than ever before. I am afraid
that somebody will take me for a witch, for trust is rare
at this point in time. How could such a sweet little town
turn into a hateful, evil town in a matter of weeks? This
confuses me.
I dreamt last night of a
giant black dog that crept sinisterly into my
bedroom and attacked me. I sat straight up in my bed and began
to weep.
It was so frightening that I decided to light my candle and
search the
room for such a dog, but my quest turned out unsuccessful.
I once heard
that dogs are supposed to be related to the devil. I pray
that it was
just the result of the witchcraft madness in Salem. Or am
I, too, becoming
afflicted?
Twelve-year-old Ann Bishop,
the daughter of Thomas Bishop, has been
afflicted. She is acting as if she went insane. They say she
has been crawling under tables and speaking an unknown language.
I do not know if I believe
all this witch-nonsense. I know my father
does not. Maybe it is as Old Myr said - these girls are just
putting on some sort of terrible act. I know Ann Bishop to
be very smart and mischeivous. Could this horrible "fever"
be the consequence of a few girls just playing around? And
if
they really are just acting, who will be the next innocent
one to be accused and perish
