Dear Little Book,
This morning I woke up early to find no one in the house. I was very frightened and rushed to the barn, just to find Mother milking our cow, Tulip. I don't think she realized my presence until I tripped and fell over a milk pail. Mother gave a jump. "Rebecca, I didn't notice you. I can feel the Devil wherever I go. You gave me fright!" She laughed nervously. "Father went to the meeting house to testify for Old Myr. You know he feels very strongly for what's right." Mother made me curious. She said there was a gathering of men at the meeting house this day. What if I could sneak over there and prevent Old Myr from getting convicted? Oh no, but I have to study my scripture today. How unfortunate. I must
miss it this once, though.

Later...

I walked quickly along the dirt road. Oh, Little book, you don't know how cold it is this winter! I drew my skirts close and shivered the whole way to the meeting house. As I passed the house of Marett Johnson and his brother, that scamp, Thomas, I saw them planting something in the garden. I waved and Marett smiled back. He is a very nice young man, I have decided. When I arrived at the meeting house, I peeked through the windows, making sure no one saw me. There was a group of men talking in loud voices. I could faintly hear them through the window. I saw my father looking distinctly worried. "I tell you that Old Myr is innocent. What has she ever done to harm you? Martha Abbot is a silly child with ridiculous ideas in her head. there is no point in having a trial!" After hearing my father talk, I grew frightened and ran home to the safety of doing chores. He is clearly going against what the rest of the town thinks - I hope he will not be punished for it!
