Dear Little Book,
Martha did return today, but she was not alone. She was with her parents, who looked very grave as Mother opened the door. Mother sensed that something was very wrong and asked me to make them all comfortable in front of the fire. Martha did not even look in my direction. Usually she is bursting with the days adventures and always greets me warmly, but tonight she was cold and silent.

Martha's parents then began to explain that Martha had fallen very, very ill. She had been behaving as the Devil himself - sometimes barking like a dog - sometimes speaking in tongues they did not even understand. They were taking her to the doctor tomorrow, but first wanted to know if I had been behaving strangely at all. Since Martha did spend so much time here....

Mother and Father exchanged looks and answered that everything was fine. Just then Martha did look my way, and I got the strange feeling that she wanted me to say something. She smiled at me, then lowered her eyes to the floor. What has gotten into her?
