My America:
A Perfect Place
,
Joshua’s Oregon Trail Diary, 1848, Book Two

By Patricia Hermes
ISBN Paperback: 0-439-38900-3
ISBN Hardcover: 0-439-19999-9

In the sequel to Westward to Home, Joshua and his family have finally arrived in Oregon. Excited about their new home, they choose the perfect spot for a farm. Though life out West is trying, they also experience success and joy, including the birth of a new baby.

November 27, 1848
There’s been a bit of a dry spell, so the men are working on clearing land again. Some of the lots, like ours, are almost cleared. And now we’re splitting trees into lumber.

It’s hard work. I keep looking at my hands. They’re so callused they look like a man’s hands. But it’s good to be working again. I can see just where our house will be.

Tonight at supper, Pa said he’s planning a trip to Oregon City for supplies. Ma nodded but she didn’t say anything.

I suspect she’s wondering if that’s the real reason he’s going. Or if he’s aiming to get himself a job. I can’t bear the thought of Pa working in a store or a bank.

But none of us said anything more. We finished our supper in silence.
