Theres been a bit of a dry spell, so the men are working on clearing land again. Some of the lots, like ours, are almost cleared. And now were splitting trees into lumber.
Its hard work. I keep looking at my hands. Theyre so callused they look like a mans hands. But its good to be working again. I can see just where our house will be.
Tonight at supper, Pa said hes planning a trip to Oregon City for supplies. Ma nodded but she didnt say anything.
I suspect shes wondering if thats the real reason hes going. Or if hes aiming to get himself a job. I cant bear the thought of Pa working in a store or a bank.
But none of us said anything more. We finished our supper in silence.
