A craft inspired by A Time For Courage:
The Suffragette Diary of Kathleen Bowen, Washington D.C., 1917

Victory PinVictory Pin
To show support for the war and the American troops fighting overseas, folks on the home front wore "V" pins for Victory. Many of these pins were homemade — something perhaps Kathleen and her sister Nell might have worn. Show your patriotic spirit and make one of these pins for yourself or as gifts for family or friends!

MATERIALS:

  • Thin cardboard
  • Glue
  • Your favorite decorative items: ribbon, beads, glitter
  • Waxed paper
  • Small safety pin
  • Tape

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Draw a V on your cardboard, and then cut it out. Remember, the wider it is the easier it is to decorate.
  2. Start gluing on your decorations — you can decorate this pin however you like — so be creative! Keep the pin flat while it dries.
  3. Turn the pin over and glue on a small safety pin — making sure that the pin opens out.
  4. Use a small piece of your tape to hold the safety pin upright until it dries.
  5. Now it's ready to pin to your favorite shirt, jacket, or backpack!
