A craft inspired by Standing in the Light:
The Captive Diary of Catharine Carey Logan,
Delaware Valley, Pennsylvania, 1763

English Garden Snack
Long before electricity, candles were used to light the way. Now, do just as the Quakers did and make your own light! Suggestion: Have an adult help you — Be very careful with hot wax!

MATERIALS:
Household candle mold (small can, old ceramic jar or cup), paraffin wax (be sure you have enough to fill your mold), wick, pan, food coloring.

DIRECTIONS:
Melt paraffin wax; most directions call for you to put the paraffin in a safe container and place in boiling water to melt. To prepare the wick, run the wick through warm paraffin and let the wick become fully saturated, then let cool. When paraffin is completely melted, carefully pour into mold. Set wick into place and let entire candle cool. For added spice — while the paraffin is soft, stir in coloring and then add some leaves, coffee beans or cinnamon sticks...just like the Quakers did!
