A craft inspired by A Journey to the New World:
The Diary of Remember Patience Whipple, Mayflower, 1620

bonnet
White bonnets like the ones worn by Mem were part of the traditional Pilgrim women's dress and were worn at all times, both indoors and outdoors. Make a bonnet of your own to jazz up a holiday celebration, or just to keep your ears toasty when it gets a little chilly!

MATERIALS:
16 inch x 16 inch white fabric
36 inch white shoelace or ribbon
Needle
White thread

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Lay your white fabric or handkerchief on a flat surface and put the ribbon across the center, so that your fabric is divided in half horizontally. Fold the fabric over the ribbon, and then fold in half again so that you form a square.
  2. Sew up the side of the square opposite the ribbon (this will be the back of the bonnet) and then shape into a hat.
  3. Use the ribbon to tighten it to fit your head.
