A craft inspired by My Face To The Wind:
The Diary of Sarah Jane Price, A Prairie Teacher,
Broken Bow, Nebraska, 1881

pillowhdrpillow
Just like Sarah Jane, many young girls spent their free time sewing. These Pillow Shams were a great way to make your bed look pretty all day. Bring history to your room and make one for your bed!

MATERIALS:
  • Piece of white cotton fabric (26" x 22" for a standard pillow)
  • White thread
  • Your favorite color embroidery floss
  • Embroidery Hoop
  • Embroidery Needle
  • Iron
  • Chalk Pencil
  • Needle
  • Scissor
  • Pencil
  • Paper
* Make sure to get a grown-up's permission to use the iron!

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Fold the raw edges of the fabric in about 1/4" and iron them down.
  2. Fold the edges in again about 1" then press them flat. Use your white thread to hem the edges.
  3. With your pencil and paper, draw a pretty shape that you would like to embroider on your pillow sham. It could be your name, an old fashioned print, or your favorite animal. Use your imagination!
  4. Make a small dot in the center of your fabric with the chalk pencil — then copy the design onto the fabric so the center of the design lines up with the small dot.
  5. Put your fabric into the embroidery hoop, and start sewing! Follow the lines you’ve drawn, and rethread the needle as necessary.
  6. When you’re done, remove the fabric from the hoop, turn it over, and iron it out. Now it’s ready to lay on top of the pillow on your bed!
