A craft inspired by Early Sunday Morning:
The Pearl Harbor Diary of Amber Billows, Hawaii, 1941

leihdrlei
The history of the floral lei dates back to the ancient Hawaiians who wore braided leaves, native flowers, shells, feathers, stones and bones to beautify themselves. They also offered these hand-made garlands to each other as a symbol of love and friendship. Try to make one yourself and "lei" it on someone special!

MATERIALS:

  • Crepe paper in all different colors
  • 3-foot piece of string
  • 2-dozen long beads

DIRECTIONS:
Take the crepe paper and cut out a few dozen flower shapes. Loosely tie a knot in one end of your 3ft piece of string and thread the other end through the eye of a large sewing needle. Sew through the centers of about a dozen or so flowers, then string on one or two of your long beads. Continue sewing on flowers and beads until you only have 3 inches or so of string left. Undo the first knot you tied, and tie the ends of the string together.
