The Three Read System:
The Key to Building Common Core Standards ELA Skills

The cornerstone of Core Clicks is the Three Read System. As mentioned, Core Clicks features 108 Instructional Units. These units are called “Text Studies,” and each one uses one Spotlight Common Core Standards ELA skill from the list above.

At the heart of each Text Study is a compelling text written by our team of nonfiction experts. The Text Study uses dynamic interactive features to guide students and educators through THREE READS of the text–developing the Spotlight Common Core skill more in depth with each subsequent encounter.

The First Read–Read the Text

Get students interested in the topic of the text using a “Before You
Read” audio clip and engaging
pre-reading video. Familiarize students with the text by going through the first read in small groups or
with the whole class. The first pass through the text
is accompanied by helpful vocabulary pop-ups and
an optional audio read-aloud for additional support.
Requires approximately one class period.

The Second Read–Analyze the Text

Now that your students have a basic understanding of the text, explore the nonfiction piece more closely. Students practice deep reading with embedded performance tasks like text marking and text-dependent questions. These activities challenge students to apply the Spotlight Common Core Standards ELA skill.
Requires approximately one class period.

The Third Read–Discuss the Text

With a thorough understanding of the text, students answer pop-up discussion questions as they go through the text a third time. Each thought-provoking discussion prompt aids teachers in managing thoughtful conversations and assessing comprehension.
Requires approximately one class period.

Review and Assessment

Each Text Study includes a Skills Workout and Question
Quest feature to reinforce the Common Core Skill
highlighted in the Text Study. Skills Workouts feature a
video, text-based activity, and printable worksheet all
focusing on the spotlight Common Core Skill. Question
Quest is a light assessment consisting of five
multiple choice text-based questions.
Requires approximately one class period.
