“Never trust anyone who has not brought a book with them,” says Lemony Snicket, the harassed—and hilarious—narrator of A Series of Unfortunate Events.

We hope that young people will follow Snicket’s advice as they head off for summer vacation. Whether their interests lie with snakes, spiders, or the supernatural, if kids read books they love they won’t have to leave the house to find adventure.

As Donalyn Miller observes in The Book Whisperer: “Readers lead richer lives, more lives, than those who don’t read.” Avid young readers also tend to become more successful later in life. Author and illustrator Dav Pilkey agrees.
